Choosing Your First Crystal: A Beginner's Guide
Not sure where to start? How to choose a crystal by intention, by instinct, or with the five stones every collection begins with.
The Crystal Store · 14 October 2026

Walking into a crystal shop for the first time can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of stones, all with different names and traditions. The good news is that there’s no wrong way to begin. Here’s how to choose your first piece.
Choose by intention
Start with how you want to feel, then find the stones traditionally associated with that feeling:
- Calm and rest: amethyst, lepidolite, howlite
- Love and kindness: rose quartz, moonstone
- Protection and grounding: black tourmaline, black obsidian, smoky quartz
- Confidence and abundance: citrine, tiger’s eye, green aventurine
- Focus and clarity: clear quartz, fluorite
You can also browse our shop by intention.
Choose by instinct
Many healers believe the right crystal chooses you. If you keep coming back to a particular stone, or one simply catches your eye, that’s a perfectly good reason to choose it. When we pick stones for your order, we choose them by hand in exactly the same way.
The five-stone starter collection
If you’d like a small, versatile collection, these five cover the most common intentions:
- Clear quartz: for clarity and setting intentions
- Amethyst: for calm and sleep
- Rose quartz: for love and self-kindness
- Black tourmaline: for protection
- Citrine: for confidence and abundance
Add a selenite plate to cleanse them, and you have everything you need to begin.
Tumble stone, point or cluster?
- Tumble stones are smooth, pocket-sized and affordable. They’re perfect for carrying or holding.
- Points are used to direct energy and set intentions on a desk or altar.
- Clusters and geodes are made to stay in one place and create atmosphere in a room.
- Bracelets let you keep a stone with you all day.
A note on wellbeing
Crystals are a lovely, gentle part of a wellbeing routine, a moment to pause and set an intention. They work alongside, never instead of, care from your doctor.
